The Spring Newsletter has arrived! From Remembrance Day with kindy children to garden projects, Bribie Island adventures and creative activities. Quality aged care in North Brisbane, QLD.
Spring 2025 brought warmth, growth and meaningful moments to Burpengary Manor Aged Care. From September's fairy gardens and intergenerational visits to November's Remembrance Day service and Elvis performances, our residents experienced three months of genuine connection, creative expression and community engagement.
Intergenerational Connections
Spring showcased the power of bringing generations together. Children from Lead Childcare Rothwell visited regularly, bringing energy and joy. In September, they helped build a potato tower in the garden, their enthusiasm infectious as they got hands dirty and learned through doing. Bellmere State School students performed a wonderful musical concert in our gardens, filling the space with smiles and laughter.
The culmination came in November with our first Remembrance Day service including kindy children. The younger generation learned about respect and remembrance, laying wreaths alongside residents. At 11:00am, everyone paused for one minute of silence. We're grateful to Caboolture RSL and Lead Childcare Rothwell for creating this meaningful North Brisbane aged care commemoration.
Garden Projects and Outdoor Activities
The garden flourished throughout spring. The fairy garden became a collaborative project capturing imaginations, with residents and families contributing creativity and watching this magical world take shape. Fresh strawberries and tomatoes were picked straight from our garden beds. We completed painting the garden bed and planted new greenery together, watching everything flourish with spring growth. After productive garden mornings, everyone enjoyed refreshing ice blocks, the perfect way to cool down together.
Community Outings and Adventures
Spring brought diverse community outings. Residents visited a lolly shop, sparking conversations about childhood treats and corner shops from decades past. The ladies enjoyed pampering followed by a relaxing bus trip to Beachmere. We took afternoon trips to Donnybrook by the water, Redcliffe and past Osprey House, often finishing with McDonald's ice cream.
Bribie Island featured prominently with lunch at Sunset Pier and two trips to the Butterfly House, where residents spent delightful mornings surrounded by butterflies in flight. Brisbane Motor Museum brought special memories for one resident who recognised his first taxi, an EH Holden. These Queensland aged care outings honour residents' continuing participation in the broader community.
Celebrations and Special Occasions
Spring brought significant celebrations. We honoured Father's Day with poker, chess and John Laws, followed by shared lunch and raffles. Two residents celebrated their shared birthday and incredible 58 years of marriage. Delma turned 103,celebrated with a live band performing Happy Birthday and a beautiful cake shared with everyone.
October brought Oktoberfest celebrations with residents preparing delicious pretzels and armchair travel to Germany. Halloween arrived with lolly sorting, morning tea with kindy children, staff costumes and trick-or-treating with families. Melbourne Cup brought high tea whilst watching the race, with Delia winning Best Dress-Up.
Music, Entertainment and Wellbeing
Music filled our Morton Bay aged care facility throughout spring. Regular music therapy sessions provided emotional expression and memory stimulation. Rob Stevenson performed multiple concerts including Halloween-themed music. Gerry entertained with his electric keyboard. The Scorpion Line Dancers brought energetic performances with staff and residents joining in. An Elvis tribute performer delighted everyone, bringing back wonderful memories through music from their youth.
Pampering sessions happened regularly, including hand massages, face masks and nail care. During one bus outing, a resident spontaneously sang, adding joyful touch to the day. These moments remind us that whilst we schedule activities, we cannot schedule spontaneity, only create conditions where it can flourish.
Creative Activities and Community Projects
Creative engagement continued steadily. Residents enjoyed cooking, knitting and natter sessions, arts and crafts. The community art project with Deception Bay Neighbourhood Centre saw residents painting on canvas with staff support. Finished pieces now display proudly on our wall. The Men's Group collaborated with Strathpine Aged Care to make salt and pepper holders, expanding social circles beyond facility walls.
Community Support and Awareness
Spring included important awareness days. Staff and residents wore pink for Breast Cancer Awareness, with raffles and donations supporting the Breast Cancer Foundation. R U OK? Day in November reminded everyone to check in with those around us. A simple question can open doors to support, connection and care. These initiatives allow our residential aged care community to participate in broader social causes.
