February at Burpengary Manor: What We’ve Been Up To
February had a lot going on. We celebrated Waitangi Day with a live haka, marked Valentine's Day with morning tea in the cafe, flipped pancakes for Pancake Day, welcomed kindy children for hand painting sessions, and introduced a new buffet breakfast that's quickly become a favourite. Oh, and we turned ourselves into AI cartoons. Twice.
Here's a look at what made this month so good.
Waitangi Day: Food, Music and a Haka
We went all out for Waitangi Day this year. The cafe served authentic New Zealand food, a New Zealand performer played a live concert, and the afternoon wrapped up with an armchair travel session exploring the beauty of Aotearoa.
But the moment everyone keeps talking about? The haka demonstration. The energy in that room was something else. For residents with New Zealand connections it was deeply meaningful. For everyone else it was an education and a genuine privilege to witness.
And yes, the pavlova debate came up. New Zealand or Australia? We're not getting into that here.
Valentine's Day Morning Tea
We gathered in the cafe for a Valentine's Day morning tea. Simple, warm, and lovely. These occasions don't need to be elaborate to mean something. Good company, a cup of tea, and a reason to celebrate the people around you. That's enough.
Pancake Day
Pancakes were on the menu for Shrove Tuesday, and residents got stuck in. There is something about cooking together that brings out the best in a room. The smell alone is enough to draw a crowd.
Our Buffet Breakfasts
This month we held not one but two buffet breakfasts in our households. The self-serve format has been a genuine hit. Residents choose what they want, serve themselves, and sit together in a cafe-style atmosphere that feels far removed from institutional dining.
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and residents are already looking forward to the next one. This is exactly the kind of initiative that reminds us how much the small things matter.
AI Caricatures: Unexpected Highlight of the Month
We experimented with AI technology to create personalised caricature images of residents and staff. The results were hilarious, and the conversations they sparked were even better. Some residents wanted copies printed for their families. A few ended up with multiple versions. Even our maintenance team got involved, proudly showing off his new Gerni in the process.
What started as a bit of fun became one of the most talked-about activities of the month.
Kindy Visits and Hand Painting
We had two visits from Lead Childcare Rothwell this month. The first was a warm, energetic morning that lifted everyone's spirits simply by having young people in the building.
The second visit was the hand painting session. Messy, creative, joyful. Little hands and big hands working side by side, children showing us their approach to colour, residents offering gentle guidance. Paint everywhere. Laughter throughout. These are the moments that stay with you.
Music, Movement and Quiet Afternoons
Music therapy ran through the month and remained one of our most consistently popular activities. Rob Stevenson also returned for a concert that had the whole room singing.
Knit and Natter
Needles clicking, conversations flowing. Our Knit and Natter group continued to be less about the knitting and more about the company. Both things are welcome.
Morning Exercise
Residents started one of their mornings with a group exercise session before heading into a household concert and an afternoon in the garden. A genuinely well-rounded day.
Pool, Bocce, Gardening and Getting Out
The new pool table has been a great addition. There's a competitive streak running through Burpengary Manor that we weren't fully aware of until that table arrived.
The garden continued to be a place residents returned to throughout the month. Planting, tending, or simply sitting in the shade. The outdoors does a lot of good.
Shopping trips also ran weekly, giving residents the independence and pleasure of picking up their own things and having a change of scenery. There is genuine happiness in something as simple as a trip to the shops.
Cool Treats on a Hot Day
On one particularly warm February afternoon, staff surprised residents with ice creams. Sometimes the best activities aren't planned. The smiles said everything.
